A new patient had an amazing history; years earlier, she had been an avid athlete, running marathons and completing Iron Man competitions until she had been diagnosed with myasthenia gravis. This chronic autoimmune disorder destroys the communication between nerves and muscle, resulting in her needing a wheelchair or walker. As part of her care, for 16 years, she had seen a chiropractor in another town.
After she moved to Greenville, this woman started under care with Dr. Megan. Her previous doctor suggested a call to share information about this patient’s care.
As they talked about hip flexors and muscular work, Dr. Megan realized that adjustments hadn’t been part of the care plan. She said, “I’m actually an upper cervical chiropractor and I intend to check her spine for subluxations and remove them.”
The other chiropractor said, “I think that’d actually do her a lot of good!”
This woman came to Upstate Specific Chiropractic in a wheelchair, or walker on good days. She needed to work appointments around her plasmapheresis treatments twice a week. These would leave her exhausted and her immune system compromised.
For 2 months, Dr. Megan checked and adjusted her where the vertebrae were misaligned. Gradually, the walker was left at home and the patient started to feel how her body was changing.
In Dr. Megan’s office is a round, red POWER button that children (or adults!) can press after an adjustment. It announces, “I’ve got the power!” in the voice of chiropractic legend Sid E. Williams.
This is a reminder that once the subluxation is removed, your body is clear of interference in the nervous system. The circuit from your brain to your body and back again has been closed, so your own power is turned back on!
After the woman with myasthenia gravis is cleared of any interference, she hits the power button. Because she knows the difference, the power that is flowing at full force within her.
This is why what we do at Upstate Specific Chiropractic, as principled chiropractors, is different from other therapies and treatments.
We aren’t spine doctors. We are neuro system doctors.
We aren’t about neck or back pain. We are about the enhancement of LIFE.
Every function that keeps you alive is controlled and coordinated by the nervous system. It is the key, the master system. We check and adjust the spine because it is a conduit to the nervous system.
The chiropractic adjustment is a new and unique input to the body, removing the pressure that is inhibiting the flow of life-giving information from the brain to the body and vice versa.
Chiropractors are the only doctors trained to do this. We do thorough exams, x-rays, and thermography scans to evaluate how your nervous system is functioning.
At each appointment, we check patients to see if they are misaligned or if they are holding their alignment from their previous appointment. If they aren’t misaligned, they aren’t adjusted! Their body is already functioning at a higher capacity.
However, when we find an area where there is misalignment and pressure on the nerves, we adjust it specifically to restore the connection, close the circuit and turn that power back on!
Increasing Quality of Life With Chiropractic
We have so many examples of where the increased nerve function, whether in subtle or dramatic ways, has improved people’s lives.
One patient was referred to us by her general practitioner for neck pain. She also had such severe swelling in her legs that she needed new shoes. Dr. Megan adjusted her where indicated in her findings.
While under care, the swelling went down until this woman’s ankles and feet were nearly back to their normal size! Her blood pressure also normalized. There was no specialized “anti-swelling” adjustment; Dr. Megan simply removed interference where she found it.
A pregnant mother came in with a 3-year-old little girl who had already had two ear tube surgeries. Her entire life had been chronic infections! Then the family started chiropractic care.
Once her baby sister was born, she was also adjusted. Three years later, neither sister has had ear infections. Baby sister has had a completely different health trajectory than her sister did at the same age.
This is why we are passionate about chiropractic care, and pediatric chiropractic in particular. It isn’t because the kiddos are cute (though they are!) It’s because we wish we’d been there to help big sister before she needed surgery in the first place!
We’re dedicated to helping raise healthy families in the Greenville area and beyond. We know that keeping families healthier means their light can shine brighter in their homes, schools, and workplaces.
As Frederick Douglass said, “It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men.”
